Most staking guides quote one APY number and stop. The truth is messier and more interesting: your real TRON staking return has two components, and understanding both makes the staking-vs-rental decision much clearer.
Here's how to calculate the real APY of your stake, with a worked example.
TRON staking APY has two parts: vote rewards from Super Representatives (often 3–8% APY) and the value of the energy you earn (worth ~0.9–1.5% APY at rental rates). Combined, realistic total APY is often 4–9%.
Component 1: vote rewards
Frozen TRX gives you voting power. When you vote for a Super Representative (SR), they typically share a portion of their block rewards with voters — commonly 3–8% APY depending on the SR. This is real yield paid in TRX.
Choosing an SR matters: some pay higher rates, some are more reliable. Rates are published on voting dashboards.
Component 2: the value of energy
Your stake also earns daily energy (~9.41 per TRX). If you use it, that energy has a value equal to what you'd have paid to rent it: 1,000,000 energy ≈ 24 TRX at current 24h rates.
Per TRX staked: 9.41 energy/day ≈ 9.41 × 24 SUN = 226 SUN ≈ 0.000226 TRX/day ≈ 0.08 TRX/year → about 0.8–1.5% APY-equivalent at current rates. Not huge, but real.
Worked example: 100,000 TRX staked
Let's do the math: 100,000 TRX at 5% vote APY = 5,000 TRX/year. Energy: 941,000 energy/day × 365 × 24 SUN ÷ 1,000,000 ≈ 8,242 TRX/year equivalent. Total ≈ 13,242 TRX/year ≈ 13.2% combined return on the staked TRX.
That's why heavy users stake: at scale, the energy value rivals the vote rewards.
The hidden cost: lockup risk
The APY is gross — the real return depends on what TRX does in price while locked. If TRX drops 20% during a 14-day lock, your 13% APY-equivalent becomes a 7% loss. This is why rental (no lockup) can be the smarter choice despite being 'more expensive' per transfer.
